Sinusitis And Herbal Treatment

Sinusitis is an extremely common form of nasal congestion where the paranasal sinuses (hollow, air-filled spaces in the bones of the face) and nasal passages become blocked and the small blood vessels in the mucosal linings become inflamed.

Many people suffer with nasal congestion throughout their lives and resign themselves to continued dependency on decongestants, antihistamines
The Root Causes of Sinusitis
According to Maharishi Ayurveda, the following general types of imbalances are  the source of most chronic  conditions, including sinusitis:
  • Toxins accumulating in tissues and blocking circulation.
  • Poor nutrition.
  • Poor digestion.
  • Imbalance of the nervous system.
  • Accumulation of physical and mental stress.
  • Lowering of natural resistance and immunity.

A sinus infection is inflammation or swelling of your sinuses. Normally, your sinuses are filled with air. When the sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, bacteria can grow there and cause infection. This is called as a sinus infection. Most people do not transmit sinus infection, except for rare instances, sinus infections are not contagious, but arise from mainly viruses and bacteria that, by chance, contaminate a person whose sinuses support their proliferation because of minor, and rarely, major abnormalities in the person’s sinus tissue for example swelling, inflammation, abnormal mucus production or facial or nasal trauma.

The sinus may be classified in several ways, such as acute sinus infection, Sub acute sinus infection, chronic sinus infection, infected sinusitis and non-infected sinusitis. Its symptom may include sinus headache, facial tenderness, pressure or pain in the sinuses, fever, cloudy discoloured drainage and feeling of nasal stuffiness, sore throat and cough and on rare occasions associated with facial swelling.Nasaya
Ayurvedic, the traditional Indian medical science, recommends a number of herbal remedies which can be very beneficial in treating sinus.
Singabera: Popularly known as ginger, singabera contains dietary polyphenols like gingerol, quercetin and ECG, which are capable of inhibiting the secretion of mucus from respiratory epithelial cells while maintaining normal nasal ciliary motion. Using ginger thus, may give you easy breathing and comfort from nasal pressure due to blocked sinus.
Methi: The seeds of Methi due to its anti-inflammatory properties can give you relief from sinus headache, coughing, reduced or absent sense of smell and taste as well as post-nasal drip, which are the symptoms generally associated with sinus.
Guggulu: Famous for its anti-inflammatory properties, Guggulu will produce a soothing effect and reduce the inflammation caused due to sinus.
Kalamegha: Due to its strong antibacterial properties, kalamegha is recognised as an effective remedy in treating the  sinus infection. It is also known to strengthen the immune system, thus killing the sinus causing bacteria or viruses.
Sathra: Famously known as oregano, Sathra oil has antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antispasmodic, and antiseptic properties. It is known to effectively fight the infections, pains, inflammation and also helps in strengthening the immune system. Along with many other ailments, Sathra oil is effectively used to treat sinus infection as well.
A person suffering from sinus infection should have freshly prepared and easily digestible warm food, lots of vegetable and fresh fruits. Avoid cold, heavy, oily foods, ice cream, cold water etc. Sleep while lying on one side and with a pillow beneath the head. This prevents in The accumulation of mucus in the air passage and helps to avoid difficulties in breathing.
