Turmeric “A Mystical Sacred Herb”

Of all the herbs in the Ayurvedic apothecary, few are as revered as turmeric. Known in Sanskrit as Haridra, this golden-orange root has been called a “mystical sacred herb” for good reason — for over four thousand years it has been woven into India’s kitchens, medicine chests, and even its weddings and worship. Turmeric in Ayurveda is prized as a purifying, balancing herb that supports the whole body, from healthy skin to clear digestion.

Turmeric in Ayurveda: the golden healer

In Ayurvedic terms, turmeric is bitter, astringent and pungent in taste, with a warming, drying quality. It is considered tridoshic — gently balancing for all three doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) when used in moderation. Traditionally it is valued as a blood purifier (raktashodhaka) and as a herb that supports the body’s natural cleansing pathways, which is why it appears in so many classical formulations.

Health benefits of turmeric

  • Soothes inflammation: Turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, is well known for its naturally anti-inflammatory qualities, making it a traditional friend to stiff or aching joints.
  • Supports radiant skin: Applied as a paste or taken internally, turmeric has long been used in Ayurveda to promote a clear, glowing complexion — a reason brides are anointed with it before their wedding.
  • Aids digestion: A pinch of turmeric in cooking helps stimulate digestion and supports a healthy gut.
  • Builds immunity: Warm turmeric milk is a time-honoured tonic to support the body’s defences, especially through the colder months.

Simple ways to enjoy turmeric

The best-loved way to take turmeric is golden milk — warm milk (dairy or plant-based) simmered with a half-teaspoon of turmeric, a pinch of black pepper to help absorption, and a little honey. You can also add it generously to curries, dals, soups and roasted vegetables, where it lends both colour and gentle healing. A small pinch of black pepper alongside turmeric is a classic Ayurvedic pairing that helps the body make the most of it.

As with any herb, moderation matters. If you are pregnant, have a health condition, or take medication, check with a qualified practitioner before using turmeric therapeutically. To discover how Ayurveda can be tailored to your own constitution, get in touch with our team.
