Ginger – a priceless kitchen healing herb

Few healing herbs are as close at hand as ginger. Sitting quietly in almost every kitchen, this humble root has been treasured in Ayurveda for thousands of years, where it is known as Maha-aushadhi — “the great medicine.” From easing a sluggish digestion to warming the body on a cold morning, ginger in Ayurveda is valued as a gentle, everyday remedy that supports health from the inside out.

Ginger in Ayurveda: the great medicine

In Ayurvedic terms, fresh ginger (Ardraka) is pungent and warming, while dried ginger (Shunthi) is lighter and especially valued for kindling agni, the digestive fire. Its heating, stimulating nature makes it particularly helpful for balancing Vata and Kapha doshas. Because it gently increases internal heat, ginger is used sparingly by those with a strongly aggravated Pitta constitution.

Health benefits of ginger

  • Supports digestion: A few slices of fresh ginger with a little lemon and salt before a meal is a classic Ayurvedic way to awaken the appetite and ease bloating.
  • Eases nausea: Ginger is widely used to calm an unsettled stomach, including travel and morning queasiness.
  • Warms and clears congestion: Ginger tea with honey is a traditional comfort during colds, coughs and seasonal sniffles, helping to loosen excess Kapha.
  • Soothes aches: Its naturally warming, anti-inflammatory qualities make it a friend to stiff joints and tired muscles.

Simple ways to enjoy ginger

The easiest way to bring ginger into daily life is a warm cup of ginger tea — simply simmer a few thin slices of fresh root in water for ten minutes and add honey to taste. You can also grate it into soups, stir-fries and dals, or stir a pinch of dried ginger powder into warm water first thing in the morning to gently stoke your digestive fire for the day ahead.

As with any herb, balance is everything. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or take medication, it is always wise to check with a qualified practitioner before using ginger therapeutically. To learn how Ayurveda can support your individual constitution, get in touch with our team.
